Did You Know About Body Scrubs

Body scrubs can mean one of three things: a spa treatment ; a treatment at home; or the product that you use to make the body scrub.

Body scrubs are one of the least valued spa treatments, especially if it is a Vichy shower. When else are you going to take a shower reclining? Although not as complete, body scrubs are easy to make at home and have a number of benefits. It is like a facial for your body, exfoliating your skin and keeping it soft.

It also stimulates your blood circulation and feels great!

You can buy a body scrub, or you can easily make your own natural body scrub for a fraction of the cost. No matter which way you go, body scrubs have these three ingredients:

1.       An exfoliate: This is the abrasive material such as salt, sugar, rice bran, jojoba beads, apricot kernels, coffee beans, oatmeal, etc. It rubs the dead cells of the surface, revealing the softest and youngest cells just below.

2.       Petroleum: This holds the mixture together. Expensive body scrubs often have more expensive oils such as macadamia oil, sweet almond oil and, kukui nut oil.

3.       Fragrance:  Ideally, the fragrance comes from high quality essential oils or from natural ingredients such as ginger, honey and spices. These will be found in the most expensive body scrubs (or those that you make yourself). The inexpensive body scrubs will have synthetic fragrances and other synthetic ingredients.

The price of body scrubs is determined by the quality of the ingredients (high quality and green vs. low quality and synthetic), the identity of the brand (high range or budget) and where it is sold (spa or specialty store vs. pharmacy).)

Body scrubs can also have nourishing ingredients for the skin and chemical exfoliates such as alpha-hydroxyl acids (AHA) to dissolve the intracellular "glue" that holds the cells together.

For example, B. Kamins, Chemist Maple Sugar Body Scrub is a high-end exfoliates enriched with patented Bio-Maple sugar, which has natural antioxidants and AHA acids. That can send the price even higher.

If you want an economical and high quality body exfoliation (scrub), it is easy to make your own. Here is a recipe for salt scrub and how to give you a body scrub at home. Use once a week is fine.

The body scrubs in the spa are more thorough and tend to leave your skin softer because the therapist works longer and gets into areas that cannot easily reach, such as the middle of the back. The therapist can use special equipment such as a Vichy shower to rinse.

The body scrubs in the spa are usually combined with a lotion application or a short massage, which is relaxing. You can get a body scrub at the spa once in a while and keep it at home.

When not to use a body scrub:
If you have a sunburn or are experiencing a rash or other skin conditions, do not use a body exfoliation bath. Some of the ingredients, and the actual rub, could further irritate your skin. You will also want to skip it after shaving if your (scrub) exfoliate contains salt or a chemical ingredient.

Finally, never use a body scrub on your face, where the skin is thinner and more delicate.
